Labor Day Prayer

Standard
“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.  The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each.  For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:7-9 NRS).

God of Work and Rest,
You, with wisdom beyond human understanding, created this world.
You molded humankind in your image and placed us here.
We labor to earn a living,
To provide for ourselves and our family.
How often do we forget that we also labor for you?
We labor for the one who came to set us free from sin and death.
Each Christians who bears Christ’s name labors,
But we do not labor alone or in vain.
Help us to remember that our life’s work is more than a paycheck;
It is more than social status or personal pride.
What we do as laborers in your vineyard,
Will be more than any other work we do on our own.
Teach me your ways, O Lord.
Teach me how to sow with words of truth and grace.
Teach me to water with deeds of justice and mercy.
Teach me to cultivate a mind like Christ in myself,
So that I will continually bear fruit for you.
May I be pleasing unto you, Lord,
So your labor will not have been in vain in me.
Amen.
