On Thursday, I began a new Bible Study about Creation. We talked about the power of the spoken word. It is the mode with which God creates in the first creation story in the Book of Genesis. God says, “Let there be light;” and there was light (Genesis 1:3). It goes on like that for six days, all of creation. God creates with God’s voice, the spoken word. God calls things into existence, into being with the power of God’s voice. It is the way God chooses to manifest creative power.

There is raw power in our voice. There exists the power to make change, to proclaim, to transform the world. Words can heal. They can also hurt. What have we chosen to do with our voice? Do we use it? Waste it? Is our voice loud? Who has silenced it and why? God created humankind in God’s image and gave us voice. Like God, we can see the power in our words, the strength to actualize our thoughts and ideas with our words. Who will hear your voice today? When they do, will they think they hear the echo of God’s voice in you?
